Decorative Concrete Used to Transform Outdoor Entertainment AreaSubmitted by Concepts in Concrete Const. Inc. in San Diego, CARick Gardella of Concepts in Concrete Const. Inc in San Diego, California submitted these photos of a recently finished project in Poway, CA at the Maderas Development located on the Maderas golf course. The pool deck, coping, bar, and palapa were all in need of a face lift. The flagstone coping around the pool was flaking and falling apart, so Rick was asked to come in and redo the entire pool area. "First, we removed the old flagstone coping on the pool and the tile in the palapa. We then set the forms for the poured in place cantilevered concrete coping and seat in the palapa," said Rick. The coping and seat were poured and colored with Bomanite's caramel color hardener. The coping was stamped with a coquina shell texture mat which the client had fallen in love with. The cantilever seat in the palapa received a smooth troweled finish. The coping on the pool and spa were sealed with a lacquer sealer which had a non-slip additive added for safety. Next, the swim-up bar was transformed. "The existing countertop was not wide enough to be comfortably reached from the stools in the pool, so we formed up and poured in place a wider countertop with a bull nosed edge over the existing one," explained Rick. "Countertops are my passion I enjoy making the best looking, smoothest, polished countertops, which are beautiful and have carefree surfaces for easy clean-up," he adds. The countertop was tinted with the same color hardener as the coping and decorative glass tiles were inlaid into the surface. The pool was then re-plastered and the same glass tiles were inlaid into the pool's edge, the stools and seats, as well as the spa's inner edge and outer surface. To complete the remodel, the palapa's floor tiles were removed. A new layer of concrete was poured on the floor and stairs. This concrete was colored with the caramel color hardener and stamped with the coquina shell texture to match the coping on the pool. As the photos attest, this was a successful project with many fabulous features and the client was thrilled with the outcome. Concepts in Concrete Const. Inc.
