Wrap-Around Fireplace Bench

Designed by the homeowner, an architect in Orinda, CA, this fireplace hearth resembles more of a curved bench creating a focal point in this residence, and seating for up to 10 people. Built and installed by Concrete Evolution, Inc., owner and contractor Stephen Tyszkiewicz, says, "We fabricated the piece in our shop and it weighs over 800lbs." From end to end, the bench measures 12' long, and 4' wide with a 10 ½" front apron. "The entire piece is only 2" thick," says Tyszkiewicz.

Tyszkiewicz took a template of the piece and built a mold in two pieces. "We do a reverse mold where we pour upside down," he explains. "We use pressed laminate so that when we pop it out, the surface is our final finish." Tyszkiewicz uses Cheng concrete mix and Buddy Rhodes concrete sealer. The color of the fireplace bench was selected from Concrete Evolution's custom colors by the homeowners. The color is called Desert Twilight. The piece was installed on a wood platform that was built out like a deck around the fireplace. "We glued it down," says Tyszkiewicz.
